The Lagos State Government’s flagship cultural project, the J. Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture and History, has won the Outstanding Historic Centre Achievement at the 32nd Annual Thea Awards held on May 2, 2026, in Orlando, United States.

The awards, presented by the Themed Entertainment Association, are regarded as the highest honour in the themed entertainment and visitor attractions industry, recognising excellence in immersive storytelling and experience design globally.

The recognition places Lagos prominently on the global cultural map, highlighting its efforts in heritage preservation and innovation.
The centre, located in Onikan, is designed as a modern cultural hub showcasing Yoruba history, language, arts and traditions through immersive exhibitions, performances and digital archives.
Leading the state delegation to the awards ceremony at the JW Marriott Hotel, Orlando, the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Toke Benson-Awoyinka, described the recognition as a validation of the state’s cultural vision.
“This win validates Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s vision to position Lagos as a global destination for culture and tourism.
“The J. Randle Centre is not just a museum; it is a living, breathing celebration of Yoruba identity built to international standards.
“To be recognised among the world’s best themed experiences is a proud moment for Lagos and for Nigeria,” she said.
The commissioner was accompanied by the project contractor and design architect, Seun Oduwole.
The Thea Awards Gala attracted leading global creators, including Walt Disney Imagineering, Universal Creative and Wētā Workshop, further underscoring the significance of the recognition.
Officials said the award reflected the centre’s world-class design and curatorial depth, as well as its potential to drive cultural tourism and international engagement for Lagos.
With the honour, Lagos joins other globally recognised destinations and projects across the United States, Europe and Asia, reinforcing its ambition to become a leading hub for culture and creative economy.
