The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of being dangerously distracted by political calculations amid worsening insecurity, warning that a recent action by the United States government signals declining international confidence in Nigeria’s security management.

BusinessDay reports that on April 9, 2026, the United States authorised the departure of non-emergency personnel and their families from its embassy in Abuja over security concerns. But the federal government dismissed the claims saying Nigeria is stable.
The ADC said such a decision by Washington goes beyond routine administrative procedure and reflects growing concern over the Nigerian government’s capacity to guarantee safety and stability.
It condemned the killing of Brigadier General Oseni Omoh Braimah and other soldiers killed during a recent terrorist attack in Borno State, describing the incident as part of a disturbing pattern of persistent security failures.
“For a country like the United States to take such a step after engaging with the Nigerian government, it signals a clear loss of confidence in the ability of this administration to guarantee safety,” Abdullahi said.
He criticised the federal government’s response to repeated attacks across the North-West, North-East, North-Central and the Middle Belt, saying communities are increasingly left vulnerable despite repeated assurances from authorities.
According to him, warnings of impending attacks are sometimes ignored, while official responses often follow a predictable pattern of condolences and promises that fail to translate into improved security outcomes.
While commending the bravery of Nigerian soldiers, the ADC said the real problem lies in systemic and leadership failures within the country’s security architecture.
The opposition party urged the President, as Commander-in-Chief, to refocus on the protection of lives and adopt a more decisive and coordinated strategy to confront insecurity.
“The current approach is not delivering results. What Nigerians need now is leadership that is focused, accountable and committed to restoring safety across the country,” the statement said.
