The Pharaohs made the brighter start and took the lead inside the opening minutes when Ahmed Saber capitalised on a costly error from Iran goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand to put the African side ahead.
Iran responded swiftly and had an opportunity to level from the penalty spot shortly afterwards, but goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir denied Mehdi Taremi from 12 yards to preserve Egypt’s advantage.
The Iranians, however, continued to press and eventually found an equaliser in the 14th minute through Ramin Rezaeian, who finished clinically to bring the Asian side back into the contest.
With qualification to the knockout rounds hanging in the balance, both teams approached the remainder of the match cautiously, resulting in a tactical battle with few clear cut chances.
Iran thought they had snatched a dramatic winner deep into stoppage time, only for the goal to be ruled out following a VAR review for offside, denying them automatic progression to the next round.
The draw was enough to see Egypt advance from Group G after finishing behind Belgium, who defeated New Zealand in the group’s other fixture. Iran’s hopes of progressing were left dependent on their standing among the tournament’s best third placed teams.
Egypt finished the group stage unbeaten after drawing with Belgium, defeating New Zealand and earning a point against Iran to secure their place in the knockout phase of the tournament.
