Before Stardom With… Gbenga Obagbemi

I am Dr Gbenga Obagbemi, a music instructor, choir trainer, music producer and passionate advocate of excellence in music ministry.

How would you describe yourself?

Over the years, I have dedicated my life to developing talent, producing quality music and helping choirs and musicians attain higher performance standards. My passion for music extends beyond entertainment; I see it as a tool for inspiration, education, worship and societal development.

Was being a musician a childhood dream?

Yes, music has always been a significant part of my life. From an early age, I was fascinated by melodies, harmonies and the power of music to influence emotions and transform lives. It started as a passion and gradually evolved into a lifelong career and calling.

What inspired you to make music for elites?

My philosophy is that excellence attracts excellence. I believe quality music should appeal to everyone, regardless of social status. However, I have always been intentional about creating music and musical experiences that reflect class, professionalism and sophistication while maintaining authenticity and substance.

Did you face any challenges on your journey to stardom?

Like many successful individuals, I encountered numerous challenges, including financial constraints, inadequate opportunities and the struggle to gain recognition. There were moments of discouragement, but perseverance, faith in God, continuous learning and consistency helped me overcome these obstacles.

How would you describe the music you create?

My music is inspirational, uplifting and purpose-driven. Whether it is gospel, choral or contemporary music, I strive to create works that inspire hope, promote excellence and positively impact listeners. I pay great attention to musical quality, lyrical depth and artistic excellence.

How do you juggle being a music instructor, music producer and the other roles you mentioned?

It requires discipline, planning and effective time management. These roles complement one another because teaching music helps me stay grounded in musical principles, while production enables me to apply creativity and innovation. I allocate specific times for training, production, rehearsals and personal development.

Has stardom deprived you of anything?

Of course. Success comes with sacrifices. One of the things stardom can reduce is privacy and personal time. There are increased responsibilities and expectations from people.

However, I see these as part of the journey and remain grateful for the opportunities that come with being recognised.

Do you still keep in touch with those who were with you before stardom?

Absolutely. True friendship is built on loyalty, trust and shared experiences. Many of the people who supported me before recognition remain valuable friends and associates today. I believe success should never make one forget those who contributed to the journey.

How do you handle advances from female fans?

I handle such situations with maturity, respect and professionalism. Maintaining strong personal values, discipline and clear boundaries is very important. I believe every admirer deserves respect, but it is equally important to uphold one’s principles and integrity.

Are you currently working on any movie or musical project?

I am currently involved in several projects, including music training initiatives, choir development programmes, music production assignments and the promotion of quality choral music.

I am also working on projects aimed at mentoring the next generation of musicians and music ministers.

Which song do you enjoy performing the most before an audience?

Honestly, I cannot point to just one song. My preference often depends on the audience and the occasion. I am especially drawn to songs that create meaningful connections and leave lasting impressions on listeners.

What advice do you have for aspiring musicians and music instructors?

First, develop your skills continuously and never stop learning. Second, embrace discipline, consistency and professionalism. Third, understand that success is a marathon, not a sprint. Build character alongside competence. Finally, remain humble, trust God and always strive for excellence in everything you do. Talent may open doors, but character, perseverance and excellence will keep those doors open.
