Olatoye vows to return stronger after C’Wealth setback

Hammer thrower Oyesade Olatoye has expressed disappointment after missing out on a medal in the women’s hammer throw at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Tuesday, but insists she remains motivated to return stronger after the setback, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Olatoye finished eighth with a best throw of 63.27m, unable to challenge the leading contenders in a high-quality final dominated by Canada’s Camryn Rogers.

Rogers successfully defended her Commonwealth title in style, setting a new Games record of 74.91m to claim the gold medal.

Speaking after the event, Olatoye admitted her preparation had been excellent but said she struggled to find her rhythm on the day.

“I think my preparation for this competition was really great. Honestly, it was just my rhythm that was off,” she said.

“Everyone is in the weather, so I don’t like to use excuses. I just wasn’t able to get a throw out. I had two throws in the cage that felt pretty good, so it’s a little disappointing, but I know it’s there and there’s more to come.”

The wet conditions also proved challenging, with Olatoye explaining that maintaining her grip and balance became increasingly difficult throughout the competition.

“Having the grip on the hammer and having our hands being wet throughout the competition isn’t the best.

The ring is flooded with water, so it makes it tough to really have that grip throughout the ring as you’re pushing forward,” she added.

Despite the disappointment, the 29-year-old remained proud of her efforts this season and described the experience as further motivation ahead of future championships.

“I wish I was able to deliver the way I wanted to and the way I know I’m capable of, but I’m still proud of the effort and proud of my season,” she said.

With the Games now over, the multiple African Games medallist plans to take a short break before beginning preparations for next season, which includes the 2027 World Championships and the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

“I’m just going to take a few weeks off for the off-season, then get back to work and start fall training,” she said. “I would have loved to finish with a medal because that’s always the goal, but I’m going to take some rest and reboot for next season.”

The 2022 African champion added that knowing a podium finish was within reach has only strengthened her resolve.

“I think it’s motivation. Knowing that the top three were definitely within range of what I could do, it motivates me. I don’t hang my head. I’m proud of Nigeria, all the supporters and everyone who has been cheering us on. I’m excited and ready to get back to work.”
