‘Nigerian State Agents In ADC’: Peter Obi Explains Exit From ADC

Peter Obi says toxic system, political pressure and internal party crises force decision to leave ADC despite respect for leaders.

Peter Obi has said his decision to leave the African Democratic Congress (ADC) was driven by pressure within Nigeria’s political system and worsening internal party disputes.

He said the political environment has become difficult for those trying to operate with what he described as sincerity, pointing to growing tension, scrutiny and division within party structures.

“We now live in an environment that has become increasingly toxic, where the very system that should protect and create opportunities for decent living often works against the people.”

He described personal strain behind his political decisions, saying many do not understand “the silent pains the private struggles, emotional burdens, and quiet battles we face while trying to survive and serve sincerely in difficult circumstances.”

Obi said pressure also comes from within political circles, stating that “some of those you associate with become part of the pressure you face, with others distancing themselves or joining criticism.

He added that values are often misread in public life. “We live in a society where humility is mistaken for weakness, respect is seen as a lack of courage, and compassion is treated as foolishness.”

On his exit from ADC, Obi said it was not due to personal conflict with party leaders. He named David Mark and Atiku Abubakar, saying neither treated him badly.

Obi linked his decision to wider political interference and internal disputes, stating that “the same Nigerian state and its agents now appear to be finding their way into the ADC, with endless court cases, internal battles, suspicion, and division.”

He said political participation has become difficult even within party structures, adding that contributors are sometimes treated “like an outsider in one’s own home.”

Obi said stepping away does not end criticism, noting that “you are still maligned and your character is questioned” even after leaving.

He also questioned public attitudes to governance and integrity, asking why “doing the right thing” is often misinterpreted and why accountability in managing resources is criticised.

Obi said his political ambition is not driven by office but by conditions in the country. He said he wants a system where citizens feel secure, where people are not displaced, and where basic needs are met.

He added that he still believes change is possible, stating his commitment to a Nigeria built on “justice, compassion, and equal opportunity for all.”
