Mexican President, Claudia Sheinbaum has ordered schools across Mexico City to close and instructed government employees to work from home ahead of the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The measures, announced on Wednesday, are aimed at reducing traffic congestion and ensuring smooth operations on the tournament’s opening day. Hosts Mexico will face South Africa at the Azteca Stadium on Thursday, June 11.
As directed, all public and private schools at every educational level will remain closed on Thursday. Federal government offices are implementing remote working arrangements, while private-sector employers have been encouraged to allow staff in non-essential roles to work remotely.
“This decree is so that the opening ceremony can take place without traffic or problems on World Cup day,” Sheinbaum said.
Officials said the temporary restrictions are also intended to improve road safety and ease movement for residents and visitors arriving in the capital for the tournament.
The measures will apply only on the opening day of the World Cup.
