Navy chief unveils housing, golf club projects, vows completion of abandoned Navy infrastructure
Idi Abbas, the Chief of the Naval Staff, has reaffirmed the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to improving personnel welfare and completing abandoned infrastructure projects across the Service.
Idi Abbas, the Chief of the Naval Staff, has reaffirmed the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to improving personnel welfare and completing abandoned infrastructure projects across the Service.
This, followed the commissioning of key facilities in Lagos as part of activities marking the Nigerian Navy Week and the Service’s 70th anniversary celebrations.
The newly commissioned projects include the Dolphin Golf Club House, a 48-room accommodation block for junior ratings, and a newly completed 16-unit block of two-bedroom flats, all located within Navy Town, Lagos.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, the naval chief described the projects as symbols of the Nigerian Navy’s growth over seven decades, noting that they reflect the Service’s determination to provide better living and working conditions for personnel and their families.
According to him, the facilities represent tangible evidence of the Navy’s transformation from its modest beginnings into a modern maritime force while reinforcing its commitment to personnel welfare, infrastructure development and institutional support systems.
Abbas emphasized that the event was particularly significant because it demonstrated the Navy’s resolve to revive and complete abandoned projects across its formations.
He revealed that the 48-room accommodation block had remained abandoned for more than five years before the current administration prioritised its completion.
He said the Navy would continue to pursue what he described as a deliberate and prudent policy of completing viable abandoned projects to ensure that investments made for the benefit of personnel are not wasted.
“The commissioning of this accommodation block sends a clear message that abandoned projects will no longer be allowed to remain dormant when they can be completed and put to productive use,” he said.
The naval chief assured officers, ratings and civilian staff that more previously abandoned projects would be completed and commissioned across the country as part of ongoing efforts to improve living standards and operational support infrastructure within the Service.
On the newly commissioned Dolphin Golf Club House, Abbas said the facility goes beyond being a sporting centre and would serve as a platform for professional networking, social interaction and stronger engagement among serving personnel, veterans and stakeholders within the wider naval community.
He noted that the clubhouse would help strengthen camaraderie and foster relationships that contribute to institutional cohesion while providing a recreational outlet for personnel.
The Chief of the Naval Staff cautioned that infrastructure development should not end with commissioning ceremonies, stressing that maintenance remains critical to sustaining the value of public investments.
He urged personnel and beneficiaries of the facilities to cultivate a strong maintenance culture and take ownership of the infrastructure entrusted to them.
According to him, accommodation blocks, recreational facilities and other support structures must be preserved and maintained to the highest standards to ensure their longevity and continued usefulness.
Abbas also called for prudent electricity consumption, warning against wasteful use of energy resources within naval formations.
The naval chief used the occasion to express appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for what he described as unwavering support towards the growth and modernization of the Nigerian Navy.
He also commended project implementation teams, contractors, engineers and workers whose efforts ensured the successful completion of the facilities.
Abbas expressed confidence that the projects would enhance institutional development, improve personnel welfare and contribute to the operational effectiveness of the Nigerian Navy in the years ahead.
