Erling Haaland scored the only goal early on, finishing coolly after being set through by Jérémy Doku just five minutes into the contest.
City dominated large spells and created numerous chances, with Martin Dubravka producing a string of saves to keep the scoreline respectable. Haaland also struck the post, while Rayan Cherki saw an effort tipped onto the woodwork.
Despite the win, manager Pep Guardiola was frustrated that his side failed to extend their advantage, as a superior goal difference could prove decisive in a tightly contested title race.
Man City sit level on points with Arsenal but lead on goals scored, with five games remaining. However, Guardiola’s men face a tougher run-in as they chase a seventh league title in nine seasons.
Burnley, managed by Scott Parker, could have equalised before half-time, but Zian Flemming squandered a clear chance. Their struggles have left them with just 20 points from 34 games, 13 adrift of safety.
Elsewhere, Bournemouth saw their European hopes dented after a 2-2 draw with Leeds United, with Sean Longstaff scoring a dramatic 97th-minute equaliser.
City’s resurgence has been remarkable, having trailed Arsenal by nine points in March. Three consecutive wins, coupled with Arsenal’s recent slip-ups, have turned the title race on its head.
“We created a lot and played a fantastic game,” Guardiola said. “We can improve in front of goal, but we are top of the table now. That is what matters.”
