Grocery delivery startup GoLemon shuts down after failing to raise fresh capital
GoLemon, the Lagos-based grocery delivery startup founded by former Paystack employees, is shutting down after failing to raise additional funding needed for its next phase, closing a two-year attempt to build a cheaper way for Nigerian households to buy food.

The company stopped accepting orders in July 2026 and will shut its customer support channels on Sunday, August 2, it said in a statement shared with TechCabal on Wednesday. GoLemon said it delivered tens of thousands of orders across Lagos since launching in 2024, with an average basket of about ₦43,700 ($32).
“We saw clear demand for planned, large-basket grocery shopping,” the company saidsaid. “What we didn’t reach, within the capital and time available, was making the wider business self-sustaining without further outside capital.”
GoLemon’s shutdown offers a window into one of African e-commerce’s hardest business models. While the startup says individual grocery orders were profitable, it never generated enough volume to cover the fixed costs of running its own supply chain.
That distinction matters for a category that has swallowed far larger companies. Jumia and Bolt both exited food and grocery delivery in Africa before GoLemon launched, citing weak unit economics and mounting losses.
GoLemon’s experience suggests a single grocery order can be profitable in Lagos. The harder challenge is generating enough orders, close enough together, before funding runs out.
“At the individual-order level, our average basket generated a positive contribution after direct costs,” the comapny said. “Those costs varied by basket size, product mix, delivery distance, fulfilment volume and whether an order included fresh produce. Larger baskets and denser delivery areas generally produced better economics.”
“The central challenge was that we hadn’t reached sufficient order density for those contributions to consistently cover the company’s broader fixed costs,” GoLemon added.
Founded in 2024, GoLemon set out to cut the middlemen between farms and Lagos kitchens. It bought in bulk straight from farmers and manufacturers, ran its own warehouses, checked produce itself, built its own shopping app and internal software, and handled delivery. The idea was to serve planned household shopping—big baskets bought on a schedule, rather than single items grabbed in a hurry.
Owning every step gave the company control over price and quality. But it also meant paying for things a marketplace leaves to others: storage, power, night shifts, engineers, and drivers.
Asked whether any of these were a mistake to build in-house, GoLemon said none was wrong on its own. The mistake was doing it all too fast.
“Looking back, we’d have sequenced that infrastructure more gradually, keep more of the cost base variable, and lean on partners earlier where we could do so without compromising affordability and the customer experience,” the company told TechCabal.
GoLemon declined to provide figures for power, diesel or payroll, saying those costs shifted materially as the business changed and standalone numbers would mislead without fuller context. It also declined to disclose how much it had raised or how much it was seeking, saying it had never made those figures public.
GoLemon shut down after failing to secure the funding it needed to continue operating. Despite its founders’ strong reputations and investor interest in the business, no financing deal closed before the startup exhausted its remaining cash. The funding environment for capital-intensive consumer startups had also become markedly tougher than when GoLemon launched in 2024.
The startup said there was no single reason investors passed. Instead, they weighed the size of the potential return against the capital and time required to reach scale in a business that is inherently operationally intensive and cash-hungry.
“The timelines required to complete an investment did not align with the runway we had left,” the company said.
Abdulrahman Jogbojogbo, one of its cofounders, had flagged the difficulty at launch. “It’s difficult to get started right now and get traction, but if we can weather the storm right now, I think we would have been able to build a formidable business,” Jogbojogbo told TechCabal in a 2024 interview.
Instead, conditions worsened. Food inflation and a weaker naira raised the cost of nearly everything GoLemon bought, while its promise to customers was the lowest price.
In December 2025, GoLemon began supplying orders through Chowdeck, the country’s largest food delivery company. Customers ordered in the Chowdeck app, GoLemon sourced and fulfilled, and Chowdeck riders delivered. The company said the arrangement widened its reach and gave it a more flexible delivery network. It did not say what share of volume the partnership represented or whether it was profitable.
GoLemon also held talks with other parties about strategic alternatives. Some of those conversations advanced, but none closed, according to the company.
“None resulted in a completed transaction within the time available,” the company said, declining to name the parties or discuss the talks. It moved to wind down after those efforts failed.
Staff salaries have been paid on a prorated basis, and no payments are outstanding to suppliers, service providers or partners, the company said. About 20% of staff have found new roles, according to the company, and GoLemon said it is making introductions and providing references for the rest.
The company said customer refund cases identified so far have been resolved, and support lines will remain open through Sunday for customers with an unresolved order or payment. It is also winding down relationships with farmers and small manufacturers directly, the statement added.
GoLemon is not conceding the thesis. It said basket sizes, repeat purchases and the number of households using it for regular shops showed real demand for planned, large-basket grocery buying and that choosing price and quality over speed was the right call for that customer.
“Our conviction remains that grocery shopping in Lagos can be made more dependable, affordable and better suited to the way households actually shop,” the company said.
The company said it plans to give a fuller account of what happened once the wind-down is complete.
