Vice President Kashim Shettima gave the commendation at the inauguration of AFCOTT Grains, a major processing plant in Kano, describing the state as a model for creating an enabling business environment.
Represented by the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, the Vice President said the facility—owned by the Kewalram Chanrai Group—has the capacity to process 40,000 tonnes of sesame and an additional 20,000 tonnes of other grains annually.
He noted that beyond food processing, the plant would strengthen Nigeria’s export capacity, deepen value-chain development, facilitate technology transfer, and create employment opportunities while improving farmers’ earnings.
In his remarks, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf reiterated Kano’s commitment to attracting both local and international investors, pledging to further expand opportunities across key sectors, particularly agriculture.
Represented by his Chief of Staff, Suleiman Wali Sani, the governor said Kano remains a strategic hub for commerce, linking producers, merchants and consumers across Nigeria and into Central Africa.
He disclosed that although the state has about 1.8 million hectares of arable land, only 40 per cent is currently utilised, underscoring the need for intensified agricultural development.
According to him, the state government is scaling up mechanised farming, expanding irrigation infrastructure, and strengthening extension services, including the recruitment of over 1,000 extension workers and the procurement of modern farming equipment.
The governor added that ongoing investments in dams and other agricultural infrastructure are designed to unlock Kano’s full potential as a leading agribusiness destination.
