The Headquarters Guards Brigade of the Nigerian Army has confirmed the death of Abdulsamad Jamiu, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, who was fatally caught in a crossfire during a security operation in Abuja.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday in Shagari Estate, Dei-Dei, on the outskirts of the Federal Capital Territory, when troops responding to a distress call engaged suspected armed robbers.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Olawuyi Odunola, Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, said soldiers under the Guards Brigade Quick Response Group had been deployed on a routine night patrol when they received reports of an ongoing robbery attack in the area.
According to him, upon arrival at the scene, the troops came under heavy gunfire from the fleeing suspects, triggering what he described as a “brief but intense exchange”.
“During the engagement, Jamiu was caught in the crossfire. Despite efforts by troops to secure the area and preserve lives, he sadly succumbed to his injuries,” the Army said.
Military authorities noted that the situation was “fluid and highly volatile”, as operatives sought to repel the attackers while ensuring the safety of residents in the densely populated community.
The Guards Brigade expressed deep sorrow over the development, describing the incident as a devastating loss not only to the deceased’s family but also to the NYSC community and the nation at large.
“The Commander, Guards Brigade, officers and soldiers extend their deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased, the National Youth Service Corps, and all who are affected by this painful loss,” the statement read.
The Army disclosed that a comprehensive investigation has been launched to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident, pledging transparency and accountability in the process.
Authorities added that the remains of the deceased corps member have been handed over to the civil authorities and deposited at Kubwa General Hospital.
The Guards Brigade stressed its continued commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the Federal Capital Territory.
It also assured residents that operational procedures would be reviewed to enhance civilian safety, particularly during rapid-response missions involving armed confrontations.
Residents were urged to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as efforts continue to curb criminal activities in Abuja and surrounding areas.
