Troops of the Joint Task Force (North East), Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), have successfully repelled another attack by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists on the 120 Task Force Battalion in Gonori under Sector 2.
Troops of the Joint Task Force (North East), Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), have successfully repelled another attack by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists on the 120 Task Force Battalion in Gonori under Sector 2.
The attack, which began late on Saturday, 9 May 2026, continued into the early hours of Sunday, 10 May 2026.
The latest assault came barely 24 hours after troops foiled a large-scale coordinated attack by the same terrorists on the Headquarters of 27 Brigade in Buni Gari and the Buni Gari Checkpoint in the early hours of Thursday, 8 May 2026.
During that encounter, troops reportedly killed no fewer than 50 insurgents and recovered a large cache of arms and ammunition from the fleeing terrorists.
Within less than 48 hours, ISWAP fighters attempted to overrun four military formations across the North-east theatre of operations, beginning with the attack on the Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Magumeri under Sector 3.
The Magumeri attack resulted in the death of two soldiers, while scores of ISWAP fighters were also killed. Parts of the facility were damaged during the assault.
Over the past two months, Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists have reportedly made no fewer than a dozen attempts to overrun military formations in the North-east operational area without success.
Security sources described the persistent attacks on military facilities as a troubling development that requires urgent and decisive action.
According to the sources, troops must intensify offensive operations against terrorist enclaves rather than remain on the defensive.
Confirming the successful repulsion of the latest attack on the 120 Task Force Battalion in Gonori, the Media Information Officer of Joint Task Force (North East), Operation Hadin Kai, Lieutenant Colonel Uba Sani, said the terrorists advanced from the Mandunari axis at about midnight but were detected early by an ambush team.
Colonel Sani further stated that, “Items recovered include one General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG), two PKTs, five AK-47 rifles, several belts of assorted ammunition, and other personal effects, further confirming the scale of the failed assault.”
He added that wounded soldiers were stable and receiving appropriate medical attention.
Colonel Sani noted that the failed attack further demonstrated the operational dominance of OPHK and underscored what he described as the futility of terrorist aggression against “well-fortified and battle-ready troops” across the theatre.
