The Nigeria Union of Journalists, Sokoto State Council, and the Correspondents’ Chapel have been thrown into mourning following the death of a veteran journalist Mohammed Ibrahim Goronyo, who passed away after an illness.

In a statement signed by the NUJ State Chairman, Usman Mohammed Binji, and Secretary, Muhammad Nasir Bello, the council described his passing as a devastating loss, noting that he was a committed professional whose dedication to journalism inspired many.
“His death has left a profound void. We have lost not just a colleague but a dependable ally and a humble soul whose passion for journalism and service to society stood as an inspiration,” the statement read.
The union added that his integrity, fairness and commitment to truth would remain unforgettable within the profession.
Similarly, the Sokoto Correspondents’ Chapel, in a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Ankeli Emmanuel, and Secretary, Musa Ubamdawaki, described the late journalist as an outstanding member whose presence brought energy and depth to the newsroom.
“The late Goronyo was not just a colleague but a very amazing individual whose presence always ignited humour, stirred discussions, and brought exclusive story scoops,” the chapel said.
The chapel noted further that Goronyo was diligent and consistent, filing reports from virtually every assignment he covered, and was widely respected for his honesty and courage.
“He strongly believed in speaking the truth, regardless of whose ox is gored,” the statement added.
Both bodies extended condolences to his family, colleagues, and the management of Aljazeera Newspaper, praying for Allah’s mercy and forgiveness upon his soul.
According to the union, he was buried on Thursday morning in Arkilla, Wamakko Local Government Area of Sokoto State, in accordance with Islamic rites.
Colleagues say his passing has left a noticeable void in Sokoto’s media landscape, where his voice, experience, and dedication will be sorely missed.
