The incident occurred at the Hill Dickinson Stadium during the 3-3 draw, with officers confirming that a 71-year-old man from Nottinghamshire was detained “on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence.”
According to police, the arrest followed reports from supporters and stewards that racist remarks were directed from the stands.
“An investigation into the incident during the match remains ongoing, and we continue to work closely with Everton FC,” a police statement said.
The suspect has since been released on bail with conditions, including a ban from going within one mile of any designated sports stadium from up to four hours before kick-off until four hours after full-time.
Everton condemned the incident, reiterating their zero-tolerance stance on discrimination.
“Racism and discrimination in all forms are completely unacceptable. They have no place in our stadia, our sport or in society,” the club said.
“The club will continue to work closely with the authorities to support their investigation and will take the strongest possible action.”
The incident marks the second time this season that Ghana international Antoine Semenyo, 26, has reportedly been subjected to racist abuse.
While playing for former club Bournemouth earlier in the campaign, Semenyo reported similar abuse from a spectator during a match against Liverpool.
He has since called for stronger measures to combat racism in football, including potential prison sentences for offenders.
