FEC Approves Reconstruction of Carter Bridge in Lagos

Federal Executive Council approves full reconstruction of Lagos Carter Bridge after structural assessment deems it beyond repair.

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the complete reconstruction of the Carter Bridge in Lagos following structural assessments that confirmed the facility can no longer be salvaged.

Minister of Works, David Umahi, disclosed this while briefing newsmen after the Council’s meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu at the State House, Abuja.

Umahi explained that the decision was based on detailed engineering evaluations, which showed that the bridge had deteriorated beyond the point of rehabilitation.

“This is not just rehabilitation. It is a complete rebuilding to modern standards,” he said.

He noted that the reconstruction would align with the administration’s broader infrastructure agenda aimed at upgrading critical national assets to meet current and future demands.

The minister added that the government is adopting reinforced concrete pavement technology for major infrastructure projects, describing it as more durable and cost-effective over time.

According to him, several road and bridge projects under the current administration are being designed with longevity and sustainability in mind, even amid rising construction costs.

Umahi further stated that the Carter Bridge project forms part of a wider effort to modernise Nigeria’s transport infrastructure, improve connectivity, and support economic growth, particularly in Lagos, the country’s commercial hub.

He assured that the government would continue to prioritise quality and value for money in executing infrastructure projects across the country.
