He described the project as a dream come true for him and the people of Nembe and Brass Local Government Areas.
Diri, who inspected the construction work on Wednesday, said the road, which cuts through the area’s mangrove forest and rivers, was a testament to his administration’s determination to connect previously inaccessible riverine communities by road despite the state’s difficult terrain.
The governor, accompanied by the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Moses Teibowei, first inspected the asphalted 10-kilometre stretch of the road, including about three bridges, before crossing the river on a barge to assess progress on another 10-kilometre section that has been stabilised.
He said the project had been adequately funded since commencement and assured all that his administration would complete it within the timeline agreed with the contractors.
On the second phase of the project being undertaken by the Federal Government, Diri appreciated President Bola Tinubu for awarding the contract and ensuring that work progresses simultaneously with the first phase being executed by the state government.
He said, “I feel accomplished. It is one thing to have the vision and another thing to have the will to execute it.
“Being a Bayelsan, the importance of this road cannot be overemphasised. This is what the people have been yearning for, and I am satisfied that they are happy about the project.
“On funding, we have never disappointed the contractor, and I believe they will not disappoint us. By the time the road is completed, it will reduce cases of sea piracy.
“Let me seize this opportunity to thank President Bola Tinubu. There was another President when we proposed this road. We wrote, but nobody responded. However, this President not only responded, he also awarded the contract for the second phase.”
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Teibowei, expressed satisfaction with the level of work completed so far, stressing that the most difficult aspect of the project had already been handled.
He said the fifth bridge under construction would be completed within three months and assured all that the road would be delivered within the stipulated timeframe.
The South-South Area Manager of Setraco Construction Company (Bayelsa and Rivers), Mr Jose Cosme, said Phase One of the road project would be completed in December 2026.
