Andoni Iraola has emerged as the leading candidate to become Liverpool’s next head coach following the dismissal of Arne Slot, sources have told ESPN.
The 43-year-old Spaniard is currently a free agent after leaving AFC Bournemouth at the end of the season, having guided the club to its highest-ever Premier League finish and a historic first qualification for the Europa League.
Liverpool are understood to be assessing several candidates before making a final decision, but Iraola is considered the frontrunner due to his Premier League experience, attacking style of play and close relationship with sporting director Richard Hughes.
Slot was dismissed on Saturday after two years in charge at Anfield, with Liverpool reportedly keen to adopt a more aggressive, high-intensity playing style. Iraola’s Bournemouth side earned praise for adopting a similar approach.
The former Rayo Vallecano coach also has a longstanding connection with Hughes, who appointed him during his time at Bournemouth in 2023. Sources indicate that Iraola’s salary expectations, believed to be around £10 million per year, would not present an obstacle for Liverpool.
Liverpool previously identified Iraola as a potential long-term successor to Jurgen Klopp during his spell in Spain and continue to regard him as one of Europe’s most promising coaches.
While VfB Stuttgart manager Sebastian Hoeness and RC Lens coach Pierre Sage remain under consideration, Iraola’s proven Premier League record and familiarity with Liverpool’s sporting leadership have placed him at the front of the race for the vacant position.
