The governor paid glowing tribute to the heroes of Nigeria’s democratic struggle, particularly the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, whose sacrifice and commitment to democratic ideals remain a symbol of the nation’s quest for civil rule and good governance.
Abdulrazaq urged Nigerians to remain vigilant in safeguarding democracy, stressing that the country’s democratic journey must continue to be nurtured through unity, tolerance, and active citizen participation.
He also reassured residents of Kwara State that his administration remains committed to strengthening security across the state.
According to him, the government is working closely with relevant stakeholders and security agencies to address security challenges and secure the release of persons currently in captivity.
“As we celebrate Democracy Day, we must remain steadfast in protecting the democratic values that unite us as a people. Our administration is committed to ensuring the safety of lives and property while pursuing sustainable development and inclusive governance,” he stated.
Speaking in his capacity as Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Abdulrazaq reaffirmed the commitment of state governors to promoting inclusive governance, sustainable growth, and policies that improve the welfare of citizens across the country.
Similarly, Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago called on Nigerians to embrace national unity and collective responsibility as essential ingredients for the sustainability of democracy.
In a statement issued through his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, Governor Bago noted that the celebration of Democracy Day provides an opportunity to reflect on Nigeria’s democratic journey, acknowledge its achievements, and recommit to strengthening democratic institutions.
He praised the resilience and sacrifices of past and present leaders who contributed to the restoration and consolidation of democratic governance, describing June 12 as a symbol of the nation’s victory over dictatorship.
While acknowledging that challenges remain, Bago maintained that Nigeria has made significant progress over the past 27 years and urged citizens to continue supporting efforts aimed at deepening democratic culture, electoral reforms, accountability, and transparency in governance.
“I congratulate all Nigerians on this significant day that marks our collective victory over dictatorship. Let us remain united and committed to nurturing our democracy until we achieve the nation of our dreams,” the governor said.
He further appealed for continued support and understanding for leaders at all levels, assuring citizens of his administration’s commitment to delivering responsible, transparent, accountable, and inclusive leadership under the New Niger Agenda.
The Democracy Day commemoration across the country focused on celebrating the sacrifices of those who fought for democratic rule, while emphasizing the need for peace, security, national unity, and good governance as foundations for sustainable development.
