Google’s vice president of engineering and co-lead of its Gemini artificial intelligence models, Noam Shazeer, has announced his departure from the technology giant to join OpenAI, marking another high-profile move in the escalating race for top AI talent.
Shazeer disclosed the decision on Wednesday in a post on X, saying he was looking forward to beginning a new chapter with the maker of ChatGPT.
“I’m excited to share that I’ll be joining OpenAI and look forward to working with the exceptional team there,” Shazeer wrote.
He acknowledged that leaving Google had not been an easy decision, paying tribute to the colleagues and projects he had worked on during his time at the company.
“It was a difficult decision to move on. I’m incredibly proud of the amazing team at Google and everything we’ve built together. It has been an honor and a pleasure to work with all of you,” he added.
Shazeer’s exit comes less than two years after his return to Google. In August 2024, the company rehired him alongside fellow researcher Daniel De Freitas, bringing the pair into its DeepMind artificial intelligence division through a partnership with Character.AI, the startup they co-founded after leaving Google in 2021.
Shazeer and De Freitas had originally departed Google after the company declined to aggressively pursue a chatbot project they had championed. The researchers subsequently launched Character.AI, which quickly emerged as one of the most prominent startups in the rapidly expanding AI sector.
His latest move highlights the fierce competition among major technology firms to recruit and retain leading artificial intelligence researchers and engineers, as companies race to secure an advantage in the development of next-generation AI systems.
The departure also comes only weeks after Google showcased a slate of new AI offerings at its annual I/O developer conference, including the Gemini 3.5 Flash model and the Gemini Spark AI agent, underscoring the strategic importance of the technology to the company’s future growth plans.
Meanwhile, OpenAI continues to strengthen its position at the centre of the AI boom. Earlier this month, the ChatGPT developer confidentially filed for an initial public offering, paving the way for what could become one of the most closely watched technology listings in recent years.
