Olabisi Ayeni, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, 82 Division Nigerian Army, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday in Enugu.
According to him, the breakthrough followed intelligence-led operations that resulted in the arrest of suspects linked to the killing of a Nigerian Army soldier and the recovery of stolen military weapons.
He explained that during interrogation, one of the suspects confessed to participating in the murder of the community leader and volunteered to lead troops to the burial site.
“On August 2, the suspects guided troops to a shallow grave within Umudike Forest, one of the criminals’ known camps, where the remains of the late community leader were successfully exhumed,” Ayeni said.
He added that the exhumation was carried out in the presence of members of the deceased’s family, vigilance service personnel from Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area, and representatives of the Aggah and Umudike communities.
According to him, the family provided a coffin and an ambulance to facilitate the dignified burial of the deceased in accordance with their customs and traditions.
Oluremi Fadairo, the Commander of Joint Task Force South-East, Operation UDO KA, who also serves as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 82 Division, expressed condolences to the family of the late Anyadu and prayed for the peaceful repose of his soul.
Fadairo assured the bereaved family and the people of Aggah Community that justice would be pursued, stressing that the suspects would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Headquarters, Operation UDO KA, to dismantling criminal networks and bringing perpetrators of violent crimes in the South-East to justice as part of its ongoing peace-building efforts.
The Army commander also appealed to members of the public to continue supporting security agencies with timely and credible information, describing public cooperation as critical to the success of ongoing security operations in the region.
