The Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday inducted 132 newly recruited officers of the Lagos State House of Assembly Service Commission and the Assembly, urging them to uphold excellence, professionalism and accountability in the discharge of their duties.

The two-day induction programme, held at the Lateef Jakande Auditorium within the Assembly complex, was organised to familiarise the new officers with legislative procedures, administrative processes, ethical standards and expectations of public service.

The recruits, comprising male and female officers from different educational backgrounds, were encouraged to demonstrate commitment and diligence as they begin their careers within the legislative service.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Clerk of the House, Olalekan Onafeko, who represented the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, urged the officers to embrace productivity, initiative and professionalism.
Onafeko said the Assembly valued excellence and accountability, adding that the new officers had a responsibility to contribute positively to the effectiveness of the legislature.
He also gave the participants an overview of the history and development of the Lagos State House of Assembly since its establishment in 1979, following Nigeria’s return to democratic rule.
According to him, the Assembly has the constitutional responsibility to make laws, conduct oversight activities and represent the interests and aspirations of Lagos residents.
The Chairman of LAHASCOM, Omowunmi Ogbara, who delivered the keynote address, charged the newly recruited officers to comply with the Lagos State Civil Service Rules and maintain high standards of discipline and ethical conduct.
Ogbara urged them to be productive and committed in their various directorates, stressing the importance of professionalism in public service.
She also observed a minute’s silence in honour of two members of staff who recently passed away, describing their deaths as a painful loss to the Assembly community.
One of the facilitators at the programme, Femi Solaja, a retired civil servant, took participants through the Public Service Rules and Regulations guiding public officers.
Solaja emphasised the importance of honesty, integrity, loyalty and professionalism, warning officers against corruption, misconduct and actions capable of damaging the reputation of the public service.
He also stressed the need for punctuality and regular attendance, urging the officers to carry out their responsibilities diligently.
“Public officers must uphold honesty, integrity, loyalty and professionalism in the execution of their duties,” Solaja said during the session.
He further reminded the recruits that official information obtained in the course of duty must not be disclosed without proper authorisation.
Solaja encouraged the officers to embrace dedication, innovation, teamwork and initiative, noting that while public servants were entitled to welfare packages and leave benefits, they were equally expected to maintain discipline and commitment throughout their careers.
The induction programme featured interactive sessions that allowed the newly appointed officers to engage with management staff.
The exercise continues on Tuesday with further sessions focused on legislative procedures, administrative processes and the core values guiding the Lagos State House of Assembly Service,
