Despite suffering a narrow 2-1 defeat in Saturday’s second leg, the Falconets’ first-leg advantage in Ikenne proved decisive.
An own goal by Malawi defender Maureen Kenneth and a fine strike from Kindness Ifeanyi had given Nigeria a 2-0 cushion seven days earlier, enough to preserve the country’s impressive record of never missing a FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup finals.
Backed by a passionate home crowd, the Young Scorchers wasted little time in testing Nigeria’s resolve. The hosts took the lead early in the first half after a defensive mix-up allowed a Malawian attacker to head home and spark hopes of a comeback.
Nigeria almost responded immediately through Favour Nkwocha, whose powerful effort struck the woodwork after a dangerous delivery from Kindness Ifeanyi.
Malawi carried their 1-0 advantage into halftime before intensifying the pressure in the 55th minute with a second goal following another lapse in Nigeria’s defence.
At 2-0 on the day and level 2-2 on aggregate, the tie suddenly swung into the balance, placing the Falconets’ flawless qualification record under serious threat.
Coach Moses Aduku responded by turning to his bench, and the move quickly paid off.
Substitute Precious Oscar emerged as the hero in the 62nd minute after capitalising on hesitation in the Malawian defence.
Oscar dispossessed her marker and calmly finished past the goalkeeper to restore Nigeria’s aggregate lead and silence the home crowd in Lilongwe.
Although the result marked a rare away setback for Aduku following dominant victories in Rwanda and Senegal earlier in the qualifiers, the Falconets successfully achieved their primary objective.
Nigeria professionally managed the closing stages to ensure the country’s flag would once again fly at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup finals.
The tournament will take place in Poland from September 5 to 26.
