Obi poised for 2027 victory, says Kwankwaso as NDC unveils Kano consensus candidates
Leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and vice-presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has expressed confidence that the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, will win the 2027 presidential election.
Leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and vice-presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has expressed confidence that the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, will win the 2027 presidential election.
Kwankwaso made the declaration on Friday in Kano during the affirmation of consensus candidates for various elective positions under the NDC platform, a move that signals the party’s efforts to strengthen its structure ahead of the next general elections.
The former Kano State governor described the consensus process as evidence of unity, discipline and internal democracy within the party, noting that aspirants and stakeholders across the state had demonstrated political maturity by embracing dialogue and compromise. Projecting confidence in the party’s chances at the national level, Kwankwaso told supporters that Obi would emerge victorious at the polls and assume office as Nigeria’s next president.
“I’m talking about Peter Obi. He will be flying our flag, and by the grace of God, on May 29, exactly one year from now, he will have been sworn in as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he said.
The event, which attracted party leaders, elders and supporters from across Kano State, also served as a platform for the formal endorsement of candidates for governorship, senatorial, House of Representatives and State House of Assembly positions.
According to Kwankwaso, the peaceful emergence of candidates through consensus reflected the growing cohesion within the NDC and its allied political groups.
He disclosed that some constituencies recorded more than 10 aspirants seeking the same ticket, but stakeholders were able to resolve differences through consultations and consensus-building rather than divisive contests.
“This outcome is a product of cooperation and understanding among our members. It shows that the party is united and prepared for the challenges ahead,” he said.
Among those affirmed was former Kano State Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, who emerged as the party’s governorship candidate for Kano State.
Also endorsed was Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, who secured the party’s ticket for Kano Central Senatorial District. Several other candidates were equally affirmed for the Senate, House of Representatives and State House of Assembly seats as the party intensified preparations for the 2027 elections. Kwankwaso used the occasion to commend members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, the CRC, Lafiya Jari groups and the New Nigeria Peoples Party for their continued support and commitment to the party’s political agenda.
Earlier, chairman of the NDC primaries committee, Mainasara Abubakar Sani, praised party members for the orderly conduct of the exercise, describing the process as transparent, peaceful and well-organised.
Speaking shortly after his affirmation, Gwarzo pledged to operate an inclusive administration if elected governor in 2027, promising to maintain an open-door policy and expand opportunities for all segments of society.
He also called on young people across the state to remain committed to the party’s ideals and actively participate in the mobilisation efforts leading to the elections.
The affirmation exercise comes as political parties continue to reposition themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the NDC seeking to consolidate its presence in Kano, one of Nigeria’s most politically influential states.
