The resignation of former Anambra State governor Peter Obi from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has drawn sharp criticism from the presidency and officials of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), who accused him of political inconsistency and opportunism.

In separate reactions posted on X, presidential aide Bayo Onanuga and Felix Morka, APC national publicity secretary, took aim at Obi’s decision to quit the opposition coalition.
Onanuga, who serves as special adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, dismissed Obi’s reasons for leaving the ADC, describing them as insincere.
“We told you so. The political nomad is on the move again. Ignore all those puerile reasons he gave in these illogical musings, a self-serving letter to his mob. Peter Obi is a politician made of jelly, an opportunistic fellow. He can’t fight Atiku or Amaechi for the ticket of ADC. He pursues the easy road, that will only lead him to doom, like in 2023. He always blames the government without doing a soul-searching of himself. Welcome, Peter to the 2027 race,” Onanuga said.
Similarly, Morka criticised Obi’s political trajectory across multiple parties, portraying his latest move as part of a pattern.
“Peter Obi, a political rolling stone that gathers no moss … roaming again in search of free, uncontested, unchallenged presidential ticket … never willing to remain to build any party … fantasizes to be president on a ticket delivered only a platter of gold … APGA – PDP – LP – ADC on to NDC … fare thee well, Nigeria’s inconsolable political DRIFTER …”
Obi had earlier announced his resignation from the ADC, citing a “toxic” political environment and persistent internal crises within the party, including legal disputes and divisions that he said undermine effective opposition politics.
While he maintained that his decision was not driven by personal grievances against party leaders such as David Mark or former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the development has intensified political tensions ahead of the 2027 general election.
The former Anambra governor and Rabiu Kwankwaso, former Kano governor, have now joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), where they are expected to contest in a joint ticket in the 2027 general elections.
Obi has been a member of five political parties. He served as governor under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) before joining the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where he contested as Atiku’s running mate in 2019. He dumped the PDP for the Labour Party in 2022, where he contested in the 2023 presidential election. The ex-governor joined the ADC earlier this year and now NDC.
