A man in Kaduna State, Mohammed Aliyu, has accused the police of handing his wife over to a mob that lynched and burnt her to death after she was falsely accused of child theft.

Aliyu alleged that his wife, Malama Ummul-khai-ri-Usman, an Islamic school teacher and mother of four, was travelling to an Islamic lecture in Maraban Jos when she stopped to ask children for directions.
According to him, residents in the area subsequently accused her of child theft, prompting a mob to gather around her.
He claimed that police officers took his wife into protective custody following the accusations, but later handed her back to the waiting crowd.
Aliyu further alleged that the Divisional Police Officer led her outside and into the hands of the mob, which lynched and burnt her alive.
A video showing the incident has since gone viral on social media, sparking outrage over the circumstances surrounding her death and the allegations against the police.
