International affairs analyst, Laskiewicz, has cautioned that King Charles must tread carefully during his high-profile visit to the United States, stressing that avoiding controversial political issues will be key to preserving diplomatic ties.
Speaking during an interview with ARISE NEWS on Tuesday, Laskiewicz noted that while the King’s role is largely ceremonial as a constitutional monarch, the visit carries significant diplomatic weight, particularly given tensions between Donald Trump and Keir Starmer.
He said, “He’s got to be very careful because Donald Trump can be easily provoked.”
Laskiewicz explained that although the King represents the British state, political decisions remain the responsibility of the government, warning against overstepping that boundary.
“Technically, he is the head of state, and the actual decisions are carried out by the head of government,” he said.
Reflecting on the planned speech to the US Congress, Laskiewicz highlighted the importance of focusing on the historical strength of the US-UK alliance rather than current geopolitical tensions.
“The point is that they have 250 years of joint history, on the whole positively working together,” he said, adding that emphasising this shared history is “undoubtedly the correct thing to do
He, however, expressed concern about references to ongoing conflicts and global issues, including Ukraine and NATO, warning such topics could undermine the visit.
“It’s the topical issues which may well ruin his speech, and I’m surprised he’s going to put them in,” Laskiewicz said.
According to him, the primary objective of the visit should be to reinforce the enduring “special relationship” between both nations, regardless of political differences between their leaders.
“The first aim is to keep the special relationship going; however long leaders are in office, the relationship is much longer,” he stated.
Laskiewicz questioned the decision to raise sensitive geopolitical matters, noting that such issues fall more appropriately within the remit of the UK government rather than the monarchy.
“It’s quite unclear to me why they want to do this because technically it’s not the King’s responsibility,” he said.
On broader US-UK relations, Laskiewicz dismissed suggestions that the alliance needs redefining, arguing instead that it remains fundamentally strong.
“I think the special relationship is in no danger of disappearing entirely or needing to be rewritten,” he said.
He added that shared values, language, and historical ties continue to bind both nations despite periodic tensions.
“They share the same language and similar views about democracy and liberty,” he noted.
Laskiewicz further described the visit as a critical diplomatic moment, comparable to historic royal engagements during periods of global tension.
“The stakes are there, if he plays it well, it will smooth over current difficulties,” he said.
“Unless the King says something that annoys President Donald Trump, that would be a problem,” Laskiewicz warned
He concluded that while the visit has the potential to strengthen ties, missteps particularly controversial remarks could risk straining relations.
