The Federal Government has commissioned the remodeled and upgraded Muhammadu Adamu Dankabo Domestic Terminal at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA), while announcing the approval of ₦46 billion for the resurfacing and reconstruction of the airport’s second runway as part of efforts to modernise Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure.

Festus Keyamo, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, who commissioned the facility on Tuesday, said the projects form part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to upgrade critical aviation infrastructure, improve passenger experience and position Nigeria’s airports to meet international standards.

Describing Kano as the commercial heartbeat of Northern Nigeria, Keyamo said the airport has been identified as a strategic gateway requiring significant investment because of its importance to trade, commerce and regional connectivity.
“Today, we are gathered for the commissioning of the remodeled and upgraded Muhammadu Adamu Dankabo Domestic Terminal at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport. In aviation terms, we simply call it MAKIA,” the minister said.
He disclosed that President Tinubu had approved N46 billion for the resurfacing and reconstruction of the airport’s second runway, saying the investment would significantly improve operational efficiency and enable Kano Airport to compete with leading international airports.
“The President has approved the sum of N46 billion for the resurfacing and reconstruction of the second runway so that the Kano Airport can compete with other international airports around the world,” he said.
Keyamo also announced that work has commenced on the upgrade of the airport’s Hajj Terminal, with contractors already mobilised to site.
“We have also begun the upgrade of the Hajj Terminal. That project is ongoing, and contractors are already on site as we speak,” he added.
The minister said the remodeled Muhammadu Adamu Dankabo Domestic Terminal is part of the Federal Government’s broader aviation modernisation programme aimed at enhancing passenger comfort, improving safety standards, increasing operational efficiency and strengthening service delivery across Nigeria’s airports.
The terminal is named after Mallam Muhammadu Adamu Dankabo, an aviation pioneer from Kano State, in recognition of his contributions to the development of Nigeria’s aviation industry.
In her remarks, Olubunmi Kuku, Managing Director and Chief Executive of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), said the upgraded terminal reflects the Authority’s commitment to providing world-class airport infrastructure and improving passengers’ travel experience.
On his part, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, Chairman of the FAAN Governing Board, commended President Tinubu and the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development for prioritising aviation infrastructure in Kano, saying the ongoing projects would further strengthen the state’s position as Northern Nigeria’s leading commercial and aviation hub.
