The report reveals that mobile technologies already underpin the global economy at massive scale, supporting 8.8 billion wireless connections and 5.8 billion unique subscribers around 70 percent of the world’s population.
The most significant shift is in direction as the industry evolves from a connectivity provider into a core pillar of the global AI-powered digital economy.
In 2025, mobile technologies and services generated $7.6 trillion in economic value which is equal to 6.4 percent of global GDP, a figure which is projected to surge to $11.3 trillion by 2030, lifting the sector’s contribution to 8.4 percent of global GDP as 5G, AI, and next-generation digital platforms expand across both consumer and enterprise markets.
The report noted that telecom operators are no longer just investing in networks but they are investing in intelligence.
Operators are embedding AI into core network operations and consumer services, while also forming partnerships with hyperscalers, AI platforms, and cloud providers to speed up innovation and reduce infrastructure risk.
GSMA analysis noted a growing share of operators now see AI monetisation as a strategic priority rather than just an efficiency tool.
This shift is driving a broader transformation as networks are becoming software-defined, programmable systems capable of delivering differentiated services such as network slicing, enterprise APIs, and real-time data-driven applications.
While 5G deployment remains central, the report highlighted that the industry is moving beyond simply expanding coverage.
The next phase is about turning networks into platforms that power entire digital ecosystems. Key trends include the expansion of 5G standalone networks to enable advanced services, growth of open APIs for developers and enterprises.
The trends also include rising demand for AI-enabled applications across industries, stronger focus on cybersecurity and digital trust infrastructure.
These developments are positioning telecom operators as foundational players in AI-driven industries such as smart manufacturing, autonomous systems, and digital finance.
The mobile ecosystem’s influence extends far beyond the industry itself. In 2025, it supported 50 million jobs globally and generated over $800 billion in public revenues.
The GSMA projects that the broader adoption of mobile-enabled digital services will continue to unlock productivity gains across developing and advanced economies, particularly as AI tools become embedded into everyday business operations.
