The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised the federal government’s celebration of Nigeria’s reported GDP growth, describing it as disconnected from the harsh economic realities facing ordinary citizens.

In a statement on Wednesday by Bolaji Abdullahi, its National Publicity Secretary, the party said “people do not eat GDP,” stressing that economic growth is meaningless if it does not translate into lower food prices, job creation, stronger purchasing power, and improved living conditions.
In a statement on Wednesday by Bolaji Abdullahi, its National Publicity Secretary, the party said “people do not eat GDP,” stressing that economic growth is meaningless if it does not translate into lower food prices, job creation, stronger purchasing power, and improved living conditions.
According to the ADC, millions of Nigerians remain trapped in hunger, inflation, unemployment, and rising business costs despite official claims of progress.
It argued that growth reflected only in government reports, while citizens face worsening hardship, cannot be considered meaningful development.
The party said food prices remain high, transportation costs have surged, and small businesses are shutting down under the weight of inflation, energy costs and weak consumer demand. It added that salaries have lost value, leaving many families struggling to survive.
The ADC urged the government to move beyond “celebrating statistics” and focus on policies that directly improve citizens’ welfare, insisting that the true measure of economic success is whether Nigerians can live better lives.
Meanwhile, ADC National Chairman Senator David Mark assured that the party would field credible candidates capable of winning elections.
He urged unity within the party, noting that recent defections would strengthen its resolve ahead of future polls.
