The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has deployed a technical election observation mission to Guinea ahead of the country’s legislative and local government elections scheduled for May 31, 2026.
According to the regional bloc, Guinean voters are expected to elect 147 members of parliament and 342 mayors during the polls, which are regarded as an important step in the country’s democratic and governance process.
The ECOWAS mission, deployed from May 24 to June 4, 2026, comprises 40 experts drawn from electoral management bodies and election observation institutions across member states.
The team has been tasked with observing the electoral process and assessing its compliance with regional and international democratic standards.
To support the operation, ECOWAS said 10 staff members from its Commission have been assigned to coordinate and oversee activities across the regions where observers have been deployed.
The regional bloc said the deployment underscores its commitment to promoting democratic governance, transparent elections, peace and political stability within West Africa.
The observers are expected to engage with key stakeholders, including electoral authorities, political parties, civil society organisations and security agencies, while monitoring voting, vote counting and result collation.
ECOWAS noted that election observation missions remain a key component of its democracy-support and conflict prevention framework, in line with the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance.
Guinea’s elections come amid efforts to strengthen democratic institutions and local governance structures, with the legislative polls expected to determine the composition of the national parliament and the local elections shaping leadership at the municipal level.
The ECOWAS observers are expected to issue preliminary findings after the elections and provide recommendations aimed at strengthening future electoral processes in Guinea and across the region.
