Scientific renaissance in Northern Nigeria

In discussions about national development in Nigeria, attention is often concentrated on politics, infrastructure, and economic reforms, while one of the most critical drivers of long-term progress receives far less recognition: mentorship in science and research. Yet, the future of any society depends largely on those willing to invest in the next generation of thinkers, innovators, and problem-solvers.

This is why the growing influence of Prof. Mahmoud Bukar Maina deserves closer attention, not merely as a celebrated scientist, but as a symbol of how mentorship and institution-building can reshape communities and redefine possibilities for young people.

Over the years, Maina has gained international recognition for his work in biomedical science and dementia research, culminating recently in the 2026 Vivensa Academy Rising Star Excellence Award. While such achievements naturally attract headlines, perhaps the more important conversation should focus on the larger ecosystem he is quietly building through the Biomedical Science Research and Training Centre in Damaturu, Yobe State.

At a time when many talented young Nigerians, especially from northern Nigeria, struggle with limited access to global academic opportunities, Maina has demonstrated that meaningful change is possible when expertise is combined with vision and commitment.

What stands out is not only his scientific accomplishment, but his deliberate investment in people. Through mentorship, academic partnerships, and institutional collaborations, several young Nigerians have reportedly secured scholarships, research placements, training opportunities, and postgraduate pathways in countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Spain, and other parts of Europe and Africa. Many beneficiaries are from Yobe State, while others come from different regions of Nigeria, including the South.

In a country where regional divisions frequently dominate public discourse, creating platforms that bring together young Nigerians across ethnic and geographical lines is itself a contribution to national development. Science, in this context, becomes more than laboratory work; it becomes a bridge for collaboration, inclusion, and shared progress.

Perhaps even more remarkable is the location of this scientific transformation. For decades, Yobe State has largely been associated in national conversations with insecurity and developmental challenges. Few would have imagined that Damaturu could emerge as a growing centre for biomedical research and international scientific collaboration. Yet BioRTC is gradually changing that perception.

The significance of this cannot be overstated. When globally relevant research infrastructure is built in places previously excluded from such conversations, it sends a powerful message to young people that excellence is not restricted by geography.

Maina’s decision to return home and invest in institution-building rather than remain comfortably abroad also reflects an increasingly rare leadership style. Nigeria’s development challenges cannot be solved solely through criticism; they require individuals willing to build systems, create opportunities, and nurture human capacity despite difficult circumstances.

Today, BioRTC has become more than a research centre. It represents an emerging model for how local institutions can connect African talent to global scientific networks. With advanced equipment, international collaborations, and training programmes in neuroscience, dementia research, infectious diseases, kidney disease, and artificial intelligence, the centre is helping expose young scientists to opportunities previously inaccessible to many of them.

Beyond the infrastructure, however, the human impact appears even more important. Young researchers who once lacked international exposure are now participating in global conferences, publishing research, and pursuing advanced studies abroad. Some are already becoming mentors themselves, creating the kind of multiplier effect Nigeria urgently needs within its educational and scientific sectors.

His role as Honourary Special Adviser on Science, Research and Innovation to the Governor of Yobe State also highlights the importance of integrating science into governance and public policy. In many developing societies, research often exists separately from government planning. Bridging that gap is essential if innovation is to contribute meaningfully to economic growth and social development.

Equally commendable is the emphasis on community-driven research. Whether investigating chronic kidney disease in local communities or advancing dementia studies involving African populations that are often underrepresented in global research, Prof. Maina’s work reinforces an important principle: science should address real societal problems.

Nigeria frequently celebrates entertainers, politicians, and business figures, but far less attention is given to scientists and mentors who are shaping future generations quietly and consistently. Yet these are the individuals building the intellectual foundations upon which sustainable development depends.

The conversation, therefore, should not only be about one man’s achievements. It should also be about what his example reveals: that with vision, mentorship, and institutional support, young Nigerians can compete globally from any part of the country.

From Yobe State to international research institutions abroad, the impact of that investment in human capital is becoming increasingly visible. And in the long run, that may prove to be far more valuable than awards or recognition.

Because nations ultimately rise on the strength of the people they prepare for the future.
