Rotimi Amaechi, former Minister of Transportation and presidential aspirant on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has urged Nigerians to elect their next president based on competence, merit and experience rather than ethnic or regional considerations.

Amaechi spoke on Thursday after submitting his presidential expression of interest and nomination forms at the ADC national secretariat, Abuja ahead of the party’s primary for the 2027 general election.
Amaechi spoke on Thursday after submitting his presidential expression of interest and nomination forms at the ADC national secretariat, Abuja ahead of the party’s primary for the 2027 general election.
The former Rivers State governor said the election should serve as a referendum on the performance records of all aspirants who had previously occupied public offices.
BusinessDay reports that Atiku Abubakar, former Vice President and Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, a business mogul, have also obtained and submitted their forms for the party’s presidential ticket.
According to Amaechi, Nigerians must prioritise leaders with proven capacity to govern and tackle the country’s economic challenges.
“If you have performed, whoever has outperformed the other, vote for the person. Nigerians should vote for merit and competence, not because somebody says it is his turn or because of ethnicity or religion,” he said.
Amaechi also criticised identity-based politics, insisting that zoning and sectional sentiments had contributed to Nigeria’s current challenges.
He further expressed confidence in his credentials, stating that his records in Rivers State and at the Ministry of Transportation showed his ability to reposition the country within four years if elected president.
