The certificate was officially presented to the management of the academy by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria on Tuesday.
Addressing the gathering, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, who was represented by a Deputy Director in the ministry, Mr John Ogwuche, lauded the management of the academy for the feat, describing it as not merely procedural but a demonstration of commitment to excellence, quality assurance and environmental sustainability.
He described the certification as a reflection of the institution’s adherence to internationally recognised standards, best practices and a strong culture of continuous improvement, accountability and operational efficiency.
According to him, “The acquisition of the IMS certification is not merely procedural; it is a clear demonstration of commitment to excellence, quality assurance, environmental sustainability, and occupational health and safety standards.
“This certification, facilitated by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria, underscores the academy’s adherence to internationally recognised standards and best practices.
“It reflects a strong culture of continuous improvement, accountability, and operational efficiency, qualities that are indispensable in today’s highly competitive and safety-conscious maritime industry.”
The minister acknowledged SON for its unwavering dedication to the promotion of standardisation and quality assurance across sectors and the management of the academy for attaining the feat, urging it not to regard it as an end in itself.
While pledging support for initiatives aimed at strengthening institutional standards, the minister cautioned stakeholders that “quality, safety and environmental stewardship are non-negotiable principles in the maritime sector.”
Presenting the certificates, the Director-General of the SON, Dr Ifeanyi Okeke, described the certification as a demonstration of the academy’s commitment to quality and operational efficiency, noting that the ISO 9001:2015 is a globally accepted framework for improving organisational processes and strengthening operational control.
Okeke said, “The successful certification of the Academy to ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 21001:2025 standards is a strong indication of management’s commitment to quality, operational efficiency, customer satisfaction, educational excellence, and continual improvement.
“The ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System Standard provides a globally accepted framework for improving organisational processes, strengthening operational control, enhancing risk-based thinking, promoting evidence-based decision making, and ensuring customer satisfaction.
“The implementation of this standard will further strengthen the academy’s administrative processes, institutional governance, training delivery systems, and service efficiency.”
Earlier in his welcome address, the Acting Rector of the Academy, Dr Kevin Okonna, appreciated the minister, the Director-General of SON, and the organisation’s staff for the support received during the process leading to the certification.
