Reactions trail FG’s extension of NYSC orientation camp to six weeks

Nigerians have expressed mixed reactions to the Federal Government’s decision to extend the National Youth Service Corps orientation programme from three weeks to six weeks as part of the sweeping reforms approved by the Federal Executive Council.

While some welcomed the emphasis on entrepreneurship, financial literacy and specialised career training, many questioned whether existing NYSC camps have the infrastructure to accommodate corps members for an additional three weeks.

The reforms, approved on Monday, also introduce 11 specialised career streams, a redesigned orientation curriculum, civilian operational leadership for the scheme, a new NYSC uniform and the replacement of the traditional Passing Out Parade with a graduation ceremony.

Reacting on X, Oserin (#DamilohunA) argued that the reforms reflected a disconnect between policymakers and recent corps members.

“No offense but this is why we need young people in places of power. A 25-28 year old who did NYSC between 2022 and now won’t suggest half of these things, and they’re in a better position to suggest reforms. It’s only someone who hasn’t been to camp recently that’ll suggest that people should be there for six weeks.”

Similarly, Big Yetty (#yetunede) questioned whether the government had considered the welfare implications of the longer orientation.

“Will the NYSC facilities be improved? A place that can barely sustain people for 3 weeks will now have to hold them at a stretch for six weeks.”

AB Rahman (#ab_rahmanii) also criticised the proposal.

“Six weeks at NYSC orientation camp?? Did they consider the expenses it will have on their (govt) meager resources? The toll it’ll take on the mobilized youths? I bet none of their kids spent a week at NYSC camp; let those that are not so privileged undergo with extra weeks.”

Legal commentator #zaco_legal said the government should first address longstanding infrastructure challenges in orientation camps before extending the programme.

“Do they even consider the infrastructural deficits that have long plagued the NYSC scheme? Take Iyana Ipaja camp in Lagos, for example. How can anyone reasonably be expected to remain in such an environment for six weeks? If reforms are truly the goal, addressing these should come first.”

Some Nigerians also questioned the relevance of spending six weeks in camp learning skills after several years in tertiary institutions.

CHAOS RISING (#geraldpeterr) wrote,”“You will finish studying medicine, pharmacy, law, engineering and other professional courses, then you will go to camp for six weeks to learn skill acquisition. Complete waste of time.”

Dr. Drimz (#DrimzOffixial) suggested that instead of extending camp, the government should allow corps members to serve in their states of origin.

“Instead of extending camp to six weeks, why not allow people to serve in their states of origin? It would reduce the financial burden, address security concerns… and still achieve the purpose of national service.”

Others expressed concern over the decision to replace military operational leadership with civilian management.

Favored Sinner (#FavoredSinner) argued that military supervision had helped maintain discipline in orientation camps.

“The only reason NYSC has maintained consistency is because the army has been handling it. Hand it over to civilians and watch them bastardise the whole system.”

Policy analyst TFKay (#TFKay_) said the success of the reforms would depend entirely on implementation.

“A reform can sound beautiful in Abuja and still fail inside a crowded camp in Iyana Ipaja, Kubwa, Awgu or Katsina. Policy is not judged by the grammar of its announcement. Policy is judged by what happens when it meets water shortage, bad hostels, weak budgets, insecurity and Nigerian reality.”

Despite the criticism, several Nigerians welcomed aspects of the reforms, particularly the focus on entrepreneurship and career development.

Mazi Ndu (#maziNdu4Real) said the additional three weeks could help improve financial literacy among young graduates.

“Imagine if nearly 500,000 graduates entering the workforce every year were fully financially literate. That’s a massive economic shift… The ₦77,000 allowance is nice, but let’s be honest, without financial literacy, thousands of corpers will finish NYSC without saving a single kobo.”

Another X user, gauzu zamani (#asunkybobo) proposed using the additional weeks to prepare graduates for professional examinations.

“The six weeks could be dedicated to preparing graduates for entry-level professional examinations of bodies such as ICAN, NIPR, NSE and other relevant professional associations.”

On Facebook, Obagbemi Fadumo Yemisi Loveth also welcomed the reform but urged the government to prioritise quality over duration.

“If the additional weeks added are truly invested in entrepreneurship, digital skills, leadership and career development, thousands of young Nigerians could leave camp better equipped for the future. However, the success of the reform will depend on the quality of training and not just the extra weeks.”

However, not everyone was convinced.

Facebook user Kudogi Alkali described the extension as excessive.

“Six weeks in NYSC camp will be psychological torture. Most corps members wouldn’t be in the right frame of mind to learn anything beyond week three and everything listed can be delivered online and in-person during the rest of the service year,” Alkali said.

Beyond policy debates, the announcement also sparked humour across social media.

X user Adizzy (#_praisejireh) joked that the longer orientation would create more camp romances.

“Camp relationships will now have enough time to become situationships. Mammy Market vendors are about to have the greatest sales season in NYSC history… Welcome to Love Island: NYSC Edition.”

Another user, OMO ERINFOLAMI (#Mie_naht) quipped that six weeks in camp could see more corps members returning home “pregnant or married”, while several others joked that the extension would test relationships outside camp.

Despite the divided opinions, many agreed that the reforms would ultimately be judged by their implementation, particularly improvements in camp infrastructure, welfare, security, funding and the quality of the proposed skills training.

The Federal Government says the reforms, the first comprehensive review of the NYSC since its establishment in 1973, are designed to transform the scheme into a skills-driven institution aligned with its broader goal of building a $1 trillion economy.
