The All Progressives Congress, Anambra State chapter, has ratified the expulsion of seven members of the party over alleged violations of party guidelines and litigation arising from the aftermath of its recent primary elections.
The All Progressives Congress, Anambra State chapter, has ratified the expulsion of seven members of the party over alleged violations of party guidelines and litigation arising from the aftermath of its recent primary elections.
The decision was taken during a stakeholders’ meeting in Awka, on Friday, presided over by the State Chairman, Senator Emma Anosike.
Recall that before primaries, the party had expelled 30 of its members for dragging it to court without first exhausting internal options for resolving disputes or disagreements.
Those whose expulsions were ratified at the Friday meeting were the state party Legal Adviser, Richard Egenti; Ifeanyi Osegbo, Chukwudi Oji, Arinze Awogu, Tony Uche Ezekwelu, Bossy Nwoye, and Uju Onyeanusi.
The party insisted that the disciplinary measures were taken in line with the party’s constitution and internal regulations aimed at preserving discipline and unity within the APC.
Speaking during the meeting, Anosike expressed concern over the financial challenges faced by the party throughout the conduct of the recently concluded primaries, noting that funding constraints significantly affected several party activities during the exercise.
He said, “Despite the challenges, we urge members to remain committed to the party’s growth and work collectively toward strengthening the APC’s chances in future elections.
“We reaffirmed our commitment to party unity, discipline, and reconciliation as the APC prepares for upcoming political engagements in Anambra State.
“The seven members who dragged the party to court without first exhausting internal options for resolving disputes or disagreements remained expelled.”
In a move to end divisions and strengthen party cohesion ahead of future electoral contests, the meeting also approved the establishment of a reconciliation committee headed by Chief Obi Onwuachu.
According to party leaders, the committee has been mandated to engage aggrieved members, address grievances arising from the primary election process, and foster unity within the party ranks.
The Publicity Secretary of the party in the state, Dr Iyke Oliobi, said that the party members’ expulsion was in line with Article 21 sub article 5 of its constitution.
The state publicity secretary, however, said that the party could recall the expelled members if they withdrew the lawsuits from the courts.
Reacting further, while speaking to journalists shortly after the meeting, the State Legal Adviser of the party, Cyprian Udenwa, expressed worry over the publication of lists of candidates on social media alleged to have emanated from the Anambra State office of the Independent National Electoral Commission.
