Disu begs Borno stakeholders to give useful information for effective community policing
Olatunji Disu, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), appealed to stakeholders and residents of Borno State to support the force by providing timely and useful information needed to ensure effective community policing in the region.
Olatunji Disu, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), appealed to stakeholders and residents of Borno State to support the force by providing timely and useful information needed to ensure effective community policing in the region.
Disu, represented by the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Intelligence Department, Zachariah Achinyan, made this call Monday during an operational and community engagement visit to Maiduguri, alongside the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Research and Planning, Zango Baba.
According to Achinyan, the community informant is critical to modern policing, adding that when members of the public confide in the police, they make the job of securing society more flexible.
He said, “We are here to activate the community informants. We will treat this information in such a way that no one can trace it to you, so that we can serve you effectively and protect our community.
He added, “We are here this morning to plead with you to find a place in your heart to work with police because the constitution has mandated us to serve you, so we don’t have options. We need information to carry out effective policing, so we were hoping you could help us safeguard our communities.
He further said, “As stakeholders, the police cannot work without you because we need each other. It is for this singular reason that the IG has asked me to meet you all so that we can rub minds and shoulders together with a view to policing this state. This is why we are advocating that you activate community informants in Borno State”, he begged.
He reiterated the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to professionalism, accountability, and service excellence.
“The information you give us we will use it in a confidential manner and in such a way that nothing will be traced to you. I can assure you that if you give the Police valuable information, you are not only helping yourselves but your entire community,” he assured.
He further emphasised the need for members of the communities across the state to be vigilant about movement and strangers.
The DIG further conveyed the Inspector-General of Police’s commitment to strengthening strategic partnerships with communities and stakeholders to enhance public trust, improve intelligence sharing, and promote sustainable peace and security.
In a separate interaction with officers and men of the Borno State Command, the visiting DIGs commended personnel for their resilience, dedication, and sacrifices in discharging their duties, particularly in the challenging operational environment of the North-East.
They acknowledged the Command’s contributions to ongoing counter-insurgency and stabilisation efforts, and they encouraged officers to remain disciplined, professional, and proactive in tackling emerging security threats through intelligence gathering and community engagement.
