Uruguay head coach Marcelo Bielsa has described Friday’s FIFA World Cup 2026 Group H clash against Spain as a “final”, insisting his side must win to secure a place in the Round of 32, according to a Reuters report.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Bielsa said Uruguay would leave nothing to chance after successive draws against Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde left their knockout hopes hanging in the balance.

Although a draw could still leave Uruguay with a slim chance of advancing as one of the best third-placed teams, the veteran Argentine coach said his team is focused solely on victory.
“We are approaching tomorrow’s match as a final,” Bielsa said.
The 69-year-old stressed that Uruguay must play with energy and initiative against the European champions while limiting Spain’s control of possession.
“We have to be dynamic and take the initiative,” he said.
“One of the best ways to defend is to make sure the opponent has the ball for less time.”
Bielsa added that Uruguay have no intention of sitting back and defending for long periods, despite the quality of their opponents.
The former Argentina and Leeds United manager also praised Spain coach Luis de la Fuente for building a side that plays “exquisite” football and singled out teenage star Lamine Yamal as the player capable of deciding the contest.
“He is a player who can unbalance a match. I am not saying anything new,” Bielsa said.
“He is a destabilising and decisive player.”
With qualification on the line, Uruguay know only a victory will guarantee their place in the Round of 32, setting up a high-stakes showdown against one of the tournament favourites in Guadalajara.
