Speaking in a goodwill message released on Friday to commemorate World Sickle Cell Day, Onolememen hailed the resilience of individuals living with the condition and their caregivers, describing them as “warriors” whose courage and determination continue to inspire communities around the world.
According to her, despite the physical, emotional, and social challenges associated with sickle cell disorder, affected individuals and their families have continued to demonstrate remarkable strength and hope.
“Living with sickle cell disorder is far more than a medical journey. It is a daily testament to resilience, perseverance, and strength. Our warriors and their families continue to inspire us through their courage and unwavering belief that a brighter future is possible,” she said.
Onolememen also commended the Niger Delta Development Commission for its commitment to improving the lives of people living with sickle cell disorder across the Niger Delta region.
She noted that collaborative efforts involving healthcare professionals, advocacy groups, communities, development partners, and government institutions have begun to yield tangible results in awareness creation, access to healthcare services, and support for affected families.
The SCAIIN founder particularly praised the Board and Management of the NDDC, led by Managing Director Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, for supporting initiatives aimed at taking sickle cell awareness and healthcare interventions directly to communities.
“History has been made through NDDC’s support in taking sickle cell awareness, education, and healthcare interventions directly to communities across the Niger Delta. This commitment has brought hope to many families who have long felt unseen and underserved,” she stated.
She expressed optimism about strengthening collaboration with the NDDC Directorate of Education, Health and Social Services and other stakeholders to develop sustainable programmes that would improve health outcomes and enhance the wellbeing of people living with the disorder.
Beyond Nigeria, Onolememen acknowledged the efforts of advocates, researchers, healthcare professionals, caregivers, and patient leaders under the Umoja Africa Sickle Cell Consortium, noting that their work continues to advance research, advocacy, and policy reforms across the continent.
She also welcomed recent developments in Ireland, where stakeholders are working towards implementing a comprehensive Model of Care for Sickle Cell Disease. She commended Ireland’s Health Service Executive (HSE) for engaging patients, families, advocates, and clinicians in healthcare planning.
According to her, the collaborative approach being adopted in Ireland offers valuable lessons for African countries, including Nigeria, in improving healthcare delivery and outcomes for people living with sickle cell disorder.
Onolememen stressed that World Sickle Cell Day should serve not only as an awareness campaign but also as a call to action for governments, institutions, and communities to commit more resources to addressing the challenges faced by those living with the condition.
“Every life matters, every voice matters, and every effort counts. Together, we are breaking barriers, challenging stigma, improving care, and creating opportunities for future generations. We must continue to work towards a future where no one living with sickle cell disorder is left behind,” she said.
