Nuhu Tafida, district head of Bogoro Local Government Area of Bauchi State, has given 21 days closure ultimatum of alcohol shops, and vowed to sanction all defaulters who violate the order.

The district head gave the directive during a sensitisation with the beer parlours and alcohol sellers in his palace Friday.

Tafida explained that the alcohol ban was part of a broader effort to tackle low birth rate, cultism, gang violence, drug abuse, theft, and street fights which have led to deaths and destruction of property.
According to him, “As leaders, the responsibilities of communities is in our hands, saying every leader will give the account of his stewardship before his creator.” He further sought the support of traditional rulers, religious leaders and health care workers in order to eradicate these deadly substance in the community. Speaking on the risk, effect and consequences tagged “Substance abuse”, the health educator Bogoro Local Government, Dogara Ayuba described them as harmful and hazardous leading to physical, Social and emotional detriment. Ayuba further outlined causes and factors associated to substance abuse to include genetic predisposition, peer pressure, environmental stress, lack of social support and curiosity. According to him, the key preventive strategy to substance abuse are family-based approach, skills development, peer pressure resistance, community policies, promoting healthy lifestyle and awareness. He stated that substance abuse was considered treatable through counseling, therapy and rehabilitation programmes. In their contributions, the chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Bogoro chapter, Pastor Amos Silas and chief Imam Mohammed Ghani commended the district head for the prompt action taken, describing it as a right decision to salvage the future of the land from collapsing. They promised to keep on sensitizing their members in various places of worship in order to raise spiritual-minded and God fearing generation in years to come. Speaking on behalf of the alcohol sellers, Haruna John appreciated the district head for the decisions, promise to abide with the order for the safety of the land.
