During the meeting, the police boss reflected on his leadership style and relationship with the media.
He explained that his philosophy of policing was shaped by ideas he developed as a young officer, noting that he had always envisioned how he would operate if he rose through the ranks.
“My approach to policing has always been guided by a long-term vision. I had a picture of how I would act if I became Commissioner of Police. Even as a cadet, I thought of what I would do if I became IG,” he said.
The police boss also highlighted the role of the media in his professional growth, admitting that he was initially apprehensive about engaging journalists.
He said, “When I was posted to Lagos, I was so apprehensive of the media. I wondered how I was going to cope with them. And I said let me face it and we called a meeting where I eventually met everybody. I learnt a lot from the media. I bonded with you.”
He noted that during his time serving in Lagos State, he encouraged officers under his command to build sincere and respectful relationships with journalists.
Recounting his time as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad, he said he faced criticism, including from within the police, over his style of engagement.
“When I was commander of RRS, I came under a series of attacks even by policemen. Some said I was doing eye service, but I did not see it that way. I saw it as an opportunity to express myself and my ideas of what policing should be,” he said.
He expressed appreciation to crime reporters for their contributions to security reporting and ongoing support for the police.
“I am here to say thank you for everything you’re doing,” he added.
