Agricultural mechanisation is critical to increasing food production, improving productivity and strengthening Nigeria’s food security efforts, the Chief Executive Officer of Agcoms International Trading Limited, Okoli Chijioke, has said.

According to him, the Federal Government’s emphasis on expanding access to modern farming equipment remains one of the most effective ways to raise farm productivity, strengthen agricultural value chains and attract younger Nigerians into agriculture.
He said, “The administration’s sustained emphasis on modernising agriculture through increased access to mechanised farming equipment represents one of the most effective pathways to raising productivity, strengthening agricultural value chains and attracting a new generation of Nigerians into farming.”
The Agcoms boss noted that the Federal Government’s mechanisation programme recorded a major milestone in January when the National Agricultural Development Fund announced a $70m agreement with Agcoms for the supply of 2,000 tractors and other mechanised farming equipment, including 100 combine harvesters.
He added that the company’s partnership with the government-backed fund aligned with broader efforts to boost food production and enhance food security nationwide.
According to Chijioke, the initiative has since been recognised by the Federal Government as one of the 40 key milestones achieved during the first two years of the Tinubu administration.
He explained that the programme goes beyond equipment procurement and includes local assembly of agricultural machinery in Nigeria, a move expected to promote technology transfer, create jobs and strengthen the country’s technical capacity in agricultural mechanisation.
“The renewed national focus on mechanisation reflects growing recognition of the role technology and modern farming equipment play in building a more productive and competitive agricultural sector,” he said.
Chijioke stressed that mechanisation remains one of the most important productivity enablers in modern agriculture, but warned that the success of such programmes depends on more than the availability of equipment.
He said sustainable outcomes could only be achieved when machinery deployment is supported by operator training, maintenance systems, financing solutions and reliable after-sales services.

He noted that such an integrated framework would help farmers improve efficiency, increase yields and contribute more effectively to national food security objectives.
The company recalled that the mechanisation initiative was first unveiled by Tinubu during his Independence Day address in October 2024, when he announced the Federal Executive Council’s approval for the establishment of a local assembly plant for John Deere tractors, combine harvesters, disc ridgers, bottom ploughs and other agricultural equipment.
The project, according to Agcoms, was conceived as part of a broader strategy to modernise agriculture, expand food production and strengthen national food security.
Chijioke commended the Federal Government’s commitment to improving agricultural productivity and said Agcoms would continue to support efforts aimed at expanding mechanisation through technical expertise, equipment support and field experience.
He further emphasised the need for a long-term framework that combines access to machinery with technical support, skills development and reliable maintenance structures to ensure investments continue to deliver value to farmers and rural communities.
The company reaffirmed its commitment to improving access to modern farm equipment and strengthening technical capacity across the agricultural sector.
Agcoms added that, as an authorised dealer of John Deere equipment, its operations extend beyond machinery supply to include technical support, training, spare parts provision and after-sales services designed to improve operational efficiency and farm productivity.
The company said it would continue to leverage its technical network and global partnerships to support the modernisation of agriculture and strengthen food production systems across Nigeria.
PUNCH Online, earlier in 2025, reported that the National Agricultural Development Fund was mandated, through a presidential directive, to lead the deployment of 10,000 John Deere tractors across Nigeria.
The initial rollout of 2,000 units was scheduled for the first and second quarters of 2025, with plans to scale up to 10,000 over the next five years.
