Jamaica’s Dejanea Oakley won gold in 50.21 seconds, while Barbados’ Sada Williams edged Onojuvwevwo to silver by just one-hundredth of a second, finishing in 50.99 seconds.
Speaking after the race, Onojuvwevwo said the achievement meant a great deal to her given how long Nigeria had waited for a medal in the event.
“I am really happy. I got a lot of support from back home, from my parents, my coach, my teammates and everybody in Team Nigeria. They believe in me, and I am thankful for everything. I am really happy to be the bronze medallist after a very long time,” she said.
The sprinter, who turned professional this year, said she was enjoying the transition to the paid ranks.
“It is really fun when you are running for money. I am just having fun and going with the flow overall,” she said.
On the conditions in the final, Onojuvwevwo said she had to adjust her approach to cope with the wind.
“It was really windy and cold, so I made sure to stay strong and try to stay relaxed on the back straight, because that is where the wind really is. I made sure to stay relaxed and keep a lot of strength to finish,” she said.
She added that more competitions await her this season, with a place at the World Championships still a possibility, saying, “I still have more competitions, and hopefully I will be at the World Championships.”
