Messi’s Father Jorge Receiving Medical Treatment, Family Appeals For Privacy

Argentina captain Lionel Messi’s family has confirmed that his father, Jorge Messi, is receiving medical care and has asked for privacy amid speculation about his health.

The family of Argentina captain Lionel Messi has confirmed that his father, Jorge Messi, is currently experiencing a health issue and is under medical care, while urging the public and media to respect their privacy amid growing speculation.

In a statement shared with ESPN, the family said Jorge Messi, 68, is receiving treatment and showing signs of improvement.

“He is currently under medical supervision, recovering, and progressing favorably within his current condition,” the family said.

They also criticised what they described as misinformation circulating about his condition, stressing that only close family members have accurate updates.

“Given the versions, rumors, and speculation that have circulated in recent hours, the family wishes to express its deep displeasure at the lack of sensitivity, respect, and scruples with which some people have treated a strictly private and family matter,” the statement continued.

“The family also wishes to clarify that only his closest family members have accurate and reliable information about Jorge’s condition. Therefore, any version, statement, or information that does not come from the family itself and its official channels should not be considered valid or true. At times like these, we ask for responsibility, prudence, and compassion.

“A person’s health and the peace of mind of those around them should not be subject to speculation or irresponsible media interest. We sincerely appreciate the expressions of affection, respect, and concern received, and we request that the privacy, confidentiality, and intimacy of Jorge and his entire family be respected during this process. Any relevant updates will be communicated promptly by the family and through the appropriate channels.”

The family did not disclose the nature of the illness.

Messi, who is currently representing Argentina at the World Cup, has been visibly emotional during the tournament. He appeared moved after scoring in Argentina’s opening 3–0 victory over Algeria, later attributing his reaction to personal difficulties.

“Why did I cry? It was something completely unrelated to football,” Messi said.

“I went through some difficult days, but I’m grateful to the entire delegation and my teammates because they were always by my side, giving me a lot of strength to help me get through it.”

Despite the off-field concerns, Messi continued to make history in the tournament, moving level with Miroslav Klose as the joint top scorer in men’s World Cup history and surpassing Pelé for the most goal contributions in the competition.

Jorge Messi has long played a central role in his son’s career, acting as his agent and managing his business affairs from his early days at Barcelona through to his transfers to Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Miami. He also oversaw negotiations, image rights, and several commercial investments across real estate, hotels, and restaurants.

In 2016, both Lionel Messi and his father were convicted in Spain over tax-related offences but avoided prison sentences.

While Messi remains with the Argentina squad in the United States ahead of their next group match against Austria, the family reiterated their appreciation for public concern.

“We request that the privacy and confidentiality of Jorge and his entire family be respected during this process,” the statement added.
