Fernandez only joined the Scottish club from Peterborough United last summer in a deal worth €2.9m, but he has quickly established himself as one of the standout defenders in the Scottish Premiership.
The 24-year-old played a key role in Rangers’ third-place finish last season, contributing five goals in 33 appearances across all competitions while impressing with his commanding displays at the heart of defence.
He also won the club’s Player of The Season award.
According to TEAMtalk, Chelsea and Arsenal remain interested in the Nigerian centre-back, although they face competition from several clubs across Europe.
The report added that Belgian champions Club Brugge, Dutch sides Feyenoord and Ajax, Premier League clubs West Ham United and Everton, as well as German outfit Borussia Dortmund, are also keeping tabs on the defender.
Fernandez’s growing reputation has also attracted interest from the Bundesliga. According to TEAMtalk and Transfermarkt, Bayer Leverkusen have entered the race for his signature and are currently regarded as frontrunners to land the Rangers star.
Fernandez has built a reputation for his aerial dominance, physical presence and ability to contribute important goals from defensive positions, qualities that have significantly boosted his market value over the last 12 months.
The major stumbling block to any potential transfer remains Rangers’ valuation of the player. While Transfermarkt currently values Fernandez at €18m, reports suggest the Scottish side are demanding at least €28m before considering offers.
With interest mounting from some of Europe’s biggest clubs, Fernandez could be set for another major career step just one year after arriving at Ibrox.
