The board of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission has assumed office in Abuja with which inauguration took place at the commission headquarters.
Board chairman Magnus Abe said the board will focus on stronger oversight. “We are here strategically to work with you and see that we uplift the commission and help our country.”
Abe added that the board will work with management under the Petroleum Industry Act, priority should include better office infrastructure. “Getting proper office accommodation should take priority over everything else.”
Commission chief executive Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan welcomed the board saying the commission relies on the board for direction, the sector faces changes linked to global oil market conditions. “The oil and gas industry is seeing volatility because of the war in the Middle East, Nigeria must prepare for energy transition and market shocks.”
Eyesan added that the commission is positioned to respond to challenges.
Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume said the board will strengthen governance in the sector, explaining that the board will provide policy direction and oversight, the move aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda.
He said members must uphold accountability and transparency.
The board includes representatives from the petroleum and finance sectors and the ministry of petroleum resources.
