The Nigeria Union of Journalists has strongly criticised a recent directive issued by the National Broadcasting Commission, describing it as a veiled attempt to stifle free speech and impose censorship on the media.

In a press release signed by its National Secretary, Achike Chude, the union expressed “grave concern and utter disappointment” over the notice issued by the NBC on April 17, 2026, which warned broadcasters to ensure “strict and uncompromised compliance” with professional standards.
The NUJ argued that the directive constitutes a direct assault on editorial independence, particularly the restriction on anchors expressing personal opinions during broadcasts. According to the union, such limitations undermine the core function of journalism, especially in political analysis and current affairs reporting.
It also faulted the classification of alleged breaches as punishable offences, warning that the threat of fines or suspension could create a climate of fear within the media industry.
The union maintained that vague regulatory provisions risk encouraging self-censorship among journalists, who may avoid asking critical questions to escape sanctions.
Citing Section 39 of the Constitution, the NUJ emphasised that freedom of expression—including the right to hold and share opinions—remains a fundamental right that cannot be overridden by regulatory codes.
The union called on the NBC to engage media stakeholders in dialogue rather than issuing what it described as intimidating directives. It also urged the government to ensure that regulatory agencies are not used as instruments to suppress the press.
Reaffirming its stance, the NUJ declared solidarity with journalists and media organisations nationwide, urging them to remain professional and resolute in their duty to inform the public.
“The media is the watchdog of society, not the lapdog of government,” the statement said, warning that any attempt to silence the press poses a threat to Nigeria’s democracy.
