Ashny and Mooh make Nigerian music history with female collaboration album ‘SHemancipation’
At a time when collaboration among female artistes in Nigeria’s music industry remains relatively rare, Nigerian singers Ashny and Mooh are attempting to shift the narrative with the release of what is being described as one of the country’s first major female collaboration albums, titled SHemancipation.
At a time when collaboration among female artistes in Nigeria’s music industry remains relatively rare, Nigerian singers Ashny and Mooh are attempting to shift the narrative with the release of what is being described as one of the country’s first major female collaboration albums, titled SHemancipation. The project follows the successful release of Ashny’s Femalepreneur album, which was unveiled at an event held at the Mike Adenuga Centre, Ikoyi, Lagos late last year
Now teaming up with fast-rising singer Mooh, known for tracks including Lamba, the duo is pushing a new creative direction centered around female empowerment, consciousness, collaboration, and social commentary through music.
Industry observers note that while male collaborations dominate Nigeria’s commercial music space, female artistes have historically struggled to build long term collaborative projects, making SHemancipation a culturally significant release within the entertainment industry.
Their musical chemistry, however, did not begin with this project, according to a statement said
“Mooh had previously featured on Ashny’s Femme Fatale album on the song He Belongs To Me a dramatic storytelling track inspired by the thematic tension of Brandy and Monica’s The Boy Is Mine as well as Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney’s The Girl Is Mine. She also appeared on Sis To Sis from Ashny’s Femalepreneur album”.
According to the team, their friendship and artistic synergy naturally evolved into a full collaborative body of work.
The project was reportedly recorded within one week in December 2025 under the guidance of veteran creative Koffi Tha Guru, who wrote all eight tracks on the project, while production was handled by Casey Jagz, the statement further said.
Described as an “afrogroovy conscious contraption,” SHemancipation explores themes around womanhood, relationships, emotional intelligence, societal pressure, self awareness, female resilience, and social responsibility.
Tracks such as Like A Man challenge stereotypes around female weakness while celebrating accomplished women across different sectors, blending Afro-pop with traditional juju influences.
On SHero, the duo explores the realities of partnership and emotional support in modern relationships, encouraging women to contribute mentally, emotionally, and financially within healthy unions.
Amina addresses more serious societal concerns, including the plight of kidnapped girls and victims of Vesicovaginal Fistula (VVF), particularly in conflict affected regions.
Meanwhile, tracks like POW, ChoChoCho, and SHenanigans combine playful delivery with social messaging, touching on social media culture, gossip, appearance consciousness, relationship drama, and the importance of women supporting women.
A teaser for ChoChoCho was recently released online, generating conversations among fans ahead of the project rollout.
Beyond the collaboration project, Ashny continues to build one of the most ambitious independent female music catalogs in recent Nigerian music history.
Between 2023 and 2025 alone, she released four albums and six EPs while also becoming the first known Nigerian female artiste to create a musical movie around her songs through The Overcomer project.
The statement further said that she is currently finalizing work on two additional albums ELLeVated and L.O.L (Labour Of Love) alongside two EPs, P.O.M.E (Product Of My Emotions) and A Dose Of Lagbaja, a tribute project dedicated to the legendary masked musician Lagbaja.
With growing conversations around female representation, collaboration, and ownership within Nigeria’s entertainment industry, SHemancipation may represent more than just another music release.
For Ashny and Mooh, it appears to be both a creative statement and a cultural conversation. Ashny is managed and produced by Koffi Tha Guru.
