A video showing a restrained suspect being shot by a police officer in Effurun, Delta State, has spread online, raising concern. Police say the officer involved has been arrested and is facing disciplinary action.
The incident involved a 28-year-old man, Mene Ogidi, and happened in Effurun. A video shows the suspect sitting on the ground with his hands tied as he pleaded with officers. One officer then fired at him. Police later confirmed the suspect died from the shooting.
In the video, the suspect begged the officers and said he was misled by a friend in Sapele. He offered to take them to the person.
Police said the man was earlier found with a pistol. In a statement, the command said: “However, the police officer leading the team, ASP Nuhu Usman, in clear violation of Force Order 237 and the Standard Operating Procedure of the Nigeria Police Force, discharged his firearm, leading to the death of the suspect.”
The police said the officer has been arrested and moved to the state headquarters in Asaba. They added that he will face further action.
“The officer has since been queried and transferred to Force Headquarters, Abuja, where he will appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee… for immediate disciplinary sanction and prosecution,” the statement said.
The Commissioner of Police also sent condolences to the family of the deceased and said the command will ensure justice is done.
