The 84-year-old former Manchester United manager, a regular presence at the club’s matches, had arrived at the stadium to watch the high-profile encounter before falling ill.
According to BBC Sport, Ferguson fell ill shortly before kick-off and was taken from the stadium via the tunnel in an ambulance as a precautionary measure. Reports indicate that he was conscious and undergoing routine medical checks.
Speaking after the match, United manager Michael Carrick revealed he had been informed of the situation before the game and admitted it had an emotional impact.
“I haven’t got any updates, so I don’t know the latest. I heard about it before the game, so I was aware. All I can say is I was very affected by the news. I hope he is all right. We wish him all the best and hope the result gives him a boost,” Carrick said.
Ferguson remains one of the most decorated managers in football history, having won 38 trophies during his time at Manchester United, including a record 13 Premier League titles and two UEFA Champions League crowns.
He also enjoyed success in Scotland, winning league titles and domestic cups with Aberdeen, and managed both St Mirren and the Scotland national team.
The Scot, who managed United from 1986 to 2013, continues to maintain a close connection with the club following his retirement and is frequently seen at Old Trafford.
Ferguson previously suffered a serious health scare in 2018 when he underwent emergency surgery for a life-threatening brain haemorrhage.
